I Am That I Am KJV — What God Said to Moses and Why It Still Matters
"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM." — Exodus 3:14 KJV
Three words. The most profound self-revelation in all of Scripture. Moses asked God for His name. God didn't give a title. He didn't give a description. The Full Context: Exodus 3:13–15 KJV
Moses was standing at a burning bush. God had just called him to go back to Egypt and confront Pharaoh. Moses asked a direct question: What is your name?
God answered in three parts.
First: "I AM THAT I AM."
Second: "I AM hath sent me unto you."
Third: "The LORD God of your fathers hath sent me unto you. This is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations."
Each part builds on the last. The name isn't just a label. It's a covenant declaration.

What "I Am That I Am" Means
The Hebrew Behind the Name
The phrase in Hebrew is Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh. It comes from the verb hayah, meaning "to be" or "to exist." It is not past tense. It is not future tense. It is pure present — eternal, self-existent being.
God is not saying "I was." He is not saying "I will be." He is saying: I simply AM. He exists outside of time. He depends on nothing. He is caused by nothing. He is limited by nothing.
Why This Name Matters
Every other name of God describes what He does. Provider. Healer. Shepherd. But I Am That I Am describes what He is — self-existent, eternal, and unchanging.
This name connects directly to the Hebrew YHWH. That is the covenant name rendered LORD in the King James Bible. Every time you read LORD in your KJV, you are reading the echo of this moment at the burning bush.
What Moses Needed to Hear
Moses had fled Egypt as a murderer. Now God was sending him back to face the most powerful ruler on earth. He needed to know who was sending him.
God's answer was not a resume. It was a revelation of His nature. The One sending Moses needs nothing and lacks nothing. That is the foundation Moses stood on when he walked into Pharaoh's court.
"I Am That I Am" and the New Testament
Jesus picks up this language deliberately in the Gospel of John. Seven times He says "I am" with a predicate:
- I am the bread of life
- I am the light of the world
- I am the good shepherd
- I am the resurrection and the life
- I am the way, the truth, and the life
- I am the true vine
- I am the door
Then in John 8:58, He drops the predicate entirely: "Before Abraham was, I am."
The crowd knew exactly what He was claiming. That is why they picked up stones. Jesus was declaring Himself to be the eternal I AM of Exodus 3:14.
What This Means for the Believer Today
The God who spoke to Moses is the same God you pray to. He has not changed. He is not limited by your circumstances or your timeline. He simply is — and He is for you.
When you are in a hard season, this name is an anchor. You are not praying to a God who might run out of power. You are not praying to a God who might run out of patience. You are praying to the self-existent, eternal I AM.
